| Jasper Nathaniel Lang, 74, veteran of service in the United
States Army, Air Force and Navy died at approximately 4:15 pm, November
19, 2001, at the home of his son Tim Lang in Kingsland, Ga. after a brief
battle with cancer.
Jasper served the United States during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Prior to World War II he constructed Liberty Ships in the Brunswick shipyards including the USS Alexander Clay, which was commanded during the war by his cousin William Isaac Lang of Waverly, Ga. Both Jasper's cousin and the ship survived the war without a scratch. Jasper is survived by his wife Lynn Lang, their three sons, Ben Clifton Lang, II, Timothy Lang and Gary Lang as well as their families including five grand children and five great grand children. This past year Jasper and Lynn celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary in a ceremony dedicated to the reaffirmation of their wedding vows. Jasper and Lynn met while Jasper was serving in the United States Air Force during the Korean War in Louisiana. When first meeting Lynn, Jasper told squadron mates, This is the woman I am going to marry." They were married October 20, 1950 in Pineville, Louisiana. Jasper was born January 11, 1927 in Camden County and raised at Wayside Plantation on the Old Post Road in the northwest part the county. He is probably one of the last Camden County residents to have known first-hand stories of the Civil War as told by his grandfather and namesake Nathaniel Lang who saw service in the Confederacy at the battles of Ocean Pond, Jonesborough and Atlanta. As a youth Jasper also heard first-hand stories or slavery from a freed family slave known only as Uncle London Jackson now buried in Camden County. In his later years Jasper was instrumental in the reclamation of the historical cemeteries in Camden County with one of the first being that in which Uncle London Jackson was buried. Jasper and his wife Lynn are members of the Guale Historical Society. Truly with his passing Camden has lost a dear son and defender of freedom. Funeral Services were held Friday, November 23d at Waverly Methodist Church with interment in Homeward Cemetery. |
